Democratic Party Warns Voters of Misleading Sample Ballot

Herndon Voters Cautioned About Unofficial Sample Ballots Indicating
Inaccurate Party Support for Town Candidates

FAIRFAX COUNTY – On Thursday, it came to our attention that a Political Action Committee unaffiliated with the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) or the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA), calling themselves the “Herndon Democrats,” are distributing misleading sample ballots inaccurately indicating a Party endorsement in the non-partisan Town of Herndon elections. In addition, one of the marked candidates on the misleading sample ballot supported last year’s failed, Republican-backed attempt to remove democratically-elected School Board Member Elaine Tholen (D-Dranesville) from office.

In response to this news, FCDC Chair Bryan Graham said, “The distribution of such sample ballots is troublesome and confusing to voters. This document purporting to be a ‘Democratic Sample Ballot’ is misrepresenting its affiliation with the Party. Such action intentionally subverts the decision of the actual Democratic Committee to not to endorse in this year’s Town elections.”

At its March meeting, the FCDC decided that the local Democratic Party would not be making endorsements in the non-partisan Town of Herndon elections this year. The FCDC is the only official Democratic Party organization for Fairfax County, which includes the Town of Herndon. FCDC members are elected by the Democratic voters of Fairfax County under the auspices of the DPVA Party Plan.

Voters can download the official Democratic Party sample ballot at FairfaxVotes.org/MyBallot or pick one up at any early voting or Election Day polling location.
