Voter Registration Advocate

Abe and Lilyan Spero were lifelong Democrats who tirelessly gave of their time, energy, and resources to electing Democrats; to achieving social justice for everyone; and to ensuring that democratic principles guide government action at every level. Abe was a trustee of George Mason University, while Lilyan held many positions of public trust during her life, including serving as Fairfax County Registrar from 1983 to 1987.

Upon Lilyan’s passing in 2011, the Fairfax County Democratic Committee established the Lilyan and Abe Spero Memorial Fund, with an initial gift of $20,000 from the Spero Estate. In keeping with Abe’s and Lilyan’s commitments during their lives, the Fund is dedicated to promoting voter registration of young Democrats in Fairfax County and encouraging them to become regular and active voters.

The Fund will defray all or a portion of the costs of projects and activities that promote those objectives, up to a maximum of $2,000 per project. Individuals and organizations, working individually or in tandem, are eligible for grants. Applications may be submitted at any time, but the aggregate value of grants is capped at $5,000 per year. To replenish Fund resources FCDC holds fundraisers from time to time.
