Fairfax Democrats Chair Responds to Youngkin’s Poor Selection for Education Job

Embattled former School Board Member has history of racist, xenophobic, homophobic tirades

FAIRFAX – The Fairfax County Democratic Committee Chair Bryan Graham released the following statement in response to Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin selecting former Fairfax County School Board Member Elizabeth Schultz to be the next Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction:

“In another warning signal that Governor-elect Youngkin is embracing an extreme GOP agenda, he has appointed Right-wing zealot Elizabeth Schultz as Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction. She was an unhinged school board member with an anti-student agenda, who actively worked against student protections and services, and who has made troubling comments regarding history curriculums. She is the last person who should be making decisions about public instruction in our Commonwealth.”

Schultz served on the Fairfax County School Board from 2011 to 2019, when she was defeated by Democratic-endorsee Laura Jane Cohen. Schultz ran as a Republican and often used her position to espouse far-Right positions on abortion, systemic racism, LGBTQ+ rights, and other issues.
