Constitution Day: Making a More Perfect Union by Getting $$ Out of Politics
This one-hour virtual panel will focus on citizen activism to overturn a series of Supreme Court decisions that have eroded our ability to regulate election spending so as to control corruption and incentivize politicians to seek broad citizen support. Now wealthy donors and special interests are free to spend without limits through Super PACs and “dark money’ groups. This discussion will cover both the Constitutional amendment process and legislative action at the state level. Participants are encouraged to stream a PBS-aired documentary by Hedrick Smith, “The Democracy Rebellion” prior to the panel discussion. This documentary highlights grassroots activism across the nation.
The Panelists: Joining Hedrick, a New York Times Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and author of The Russians and Who Stole the American Dream, will be John Pudner, Executive Director of Take Back Our Republic. They will join a panel of Virginia legislators, including Senator Creigh Deeds and Delegate VanValkenburg, and members of American Promise (Michael Deal and Nancy Morgan), to explore how we, as Virginians, can take action, guided by history and the stories of average citizens across the country who have successfully taken action against the corrosive impact of money on our elections.
