Starting Date: January 2020

Job Summary and Responsibilities:

The Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) is seeking an energetic, forward-looking, self starter as a full time Executive Director to manage a broad spectrum of political functions for the County Committee and to manage the operations of FCDC’s office. These duties include, but are not limited to, support of fundraising and volunteer recruiting, organizing volunteers and supervising interns, performing a variety of office and political functions, maintaining internal and external communications, ensuring equipment remains functional and the office operates effectively and efficiently, advising the Chair and Steering Committee on committee business and political operations, organizing various political events, and coordinating with political campaigns in Fairfax County. The Executive Director is currently the only paid staff member of the committee but from time to time may be assisted by volunteers, interns, and contracted staff. The Executive Director works independently with general direction from the committee Chair and FCDC’s leadership.

Qualifications:

FCDC prefers an applicant with at least a bachelor’s degree in political science, public affairs, public administration, or a related field with two or more years of experience working in a Democratic political organization such as a similar political committee or equivalent campaign experience at the campaign manager or field director level.

Knowledge and Skills:
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
2. Knowledge of office business practices including budgeting and contracting.
3. Familiarity with fundraising strategy and techniques and FEC and Virginia fundraising rules and regulations.
4. Knowledge of the uses of technology in an office and political organization including Web site management, voter data bases, Microsoft Office, NGP, and uses of mass emails and social media.
5. Familiarity with Fairfax County and Virginia political organizations and elections.
6. Ability to organize, train, and lead groups of volunteers and interns from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
7. Ability to work cooperatively with members at all levels of the organization.

Benefits:

Within limits, FCDC will share the costs of benefits, including health insurance. Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience. With satisfactory performance, salary will be adjusted annually for inflation and merit.

Working Environment:

Fairfax County is the most populous county in Virginia with over a million residents. About one of every seven Virginians lives in the county. Known for its quality of life, excellent business climate, and world class school system, Fairfax County has a history of supporting Democratic candidates in most elections but recently has turned almost completely blue.

FCDC is the local political committee and operates under the auspices of the Democratic Party of Virginia. It is one of the largest grassroots political organizations in the state, with over 600 members and an annual budget ranging from $300-500,000. FCDC is governed by an elected chair, various vice chairs, district chairs, and standing committee chairs who are members of steering committee. More information is available on the web at www.fairfaxdemocrats.org.

This is a full-time position. The Executive Director will be expected to maintain regular business hours in the FCDC office on weekdays. However, FCDC operates in a campaign environment, and the Executive Director often will need to attend meetings and events outside normal business hours and at locations around the county, so some flexibility in schedule is required. Unless political events are scheduled, the Executive Director is given time off for federal holidays. The Executive Director will receive two weeks of paid vacation leave and paid sick leave will be accrued at the rate of one day per month.
