The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) is an independent political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its boundaries are the same as those of Fairfax County. Chartered by the Commonwealth in 1945 to provide natural resource conservation management assistance to citizens and local governments, NVSWCD is now one of 47 conservation districts in Virginia and approximately 3,000 nationwide.  The District’s mission is to lessen the impact of urban/suburban activities on land and water resources in Fairfax County.  The agency is governed by a five-member Board of Directors, three of whom are elected and two of whom are appointed. The District employs seven staff to carry out the organization’s technical and educational programs. The District has a strong partnership with Fairfax County and collaborates with local, state and federal agencies and a broad array of organizations, businesses, suburban and agricultural land managers, and individuals.
